What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy® is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive procedure that lifts and tightens the neck, chin and brow, and improves lines and wrinkles on the chest

How does Ultherapy work?

Using ultrasound energy, Ultherapy® treatments lift and tighten the skin on the face, the neck, and the brow. Ultherapy treatments work on the deepest layers of tissues.  These are the layers usually targeted during a facelift or neck lift. By treating these tissues with ultrasound waves and leaving the surface intact, the effect is to increase collagen production, resulting in younger-looking skin.

Dr. Roberto Garcia was one of the first specialists to bring this ground-breaking technology to this region.  The practitioners at Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery perform roughly 5 treatments weekly with amazing results!

Ultherapy Benefits

Ultherapy is designed to be a non-surgical treatment of the brow, jawline, and neck with no downtime and minimal discomfort.  One can expect dramatic results that are very natural and long lasting.  Ultherapy improves the look of the upper, middle and lower parts of the face, and the neck. It is most effective for correcting the following:

  • Mid-face sagging
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines (corner of the mouth)
  • Sagging fat
  • Loose skin and fat under the chin and jaw
  • Aging or sagging brows

Ultherapy Procedure

The patient is made as comfortable as possible.  Our technician will explain every aspect of the procedure in order to properly set expectations.  The skin is cleansed and the ultrasound gel is applied to the target area. The Ultherapy handpiece is placed on the skin, delivering low-level focused heat as it moves over the target area. Mild discomfort may be experienced as the heat is delivered beneath the skin. Discomfort levels vary from patient to patient, and on the area being treated.  Treatment times can vary, usually taking 60 to 90 minutes to treat the entire face and neck.  A partial face or brow usually takes 30 minutes to an hour.

At Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery, our specially trained technician’s main goal is to help the patient experience little to no discomfort and ensure that the procedure is as calming as possible.

Who are good candidates for Ultherapy?

A good candidate is someone with skin that has some degree of laxity, to the point of looking, and often feeling less firm.  A lowered eyebrow line for sagging skin on the eyelids, for instance, is usually the first sign of maturing skin.  Loose skin under the neck and under the chin signals a patient might be a candidate.  Both men and women are good candidates at any age to strengthen existing collagen and produce fresh, new collagen.

The best candidates for Ultherapy want to correct one or more of the signs of aging indicated above; have some facial sagging, but still have elasticity in their skin; are generally healthy; and have realistic expectations about what Ultherapy can do.

Is Ultherapy safe?

Ultherapy is very safe. The procedure has been cleared by the FDA after demonstrating safety in clinical studies, and over several hundred thousand treatments performed safely worldwide.

Is there any pain associated with treatment?

Most patients tolerate the procedure very well. Depending on the comfort threshold of the patient, Dr. Garcia may administer an oral pain management medication. If there is discomfort during treatment, it is temporary and only occurs while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.

How is Ultherapy different from Other Laser resurfacing treatments?

The primary difference between Ultherapy and laser resurfacing treatments is the depth at which your skin is treated. While lasers focus energy on the surface of the skin, Ultherapy targets deep below the skin (3 mm and 4.5 mm beneath the surface). Treating the deeper layers of skin provides a predictable lifting and tightening from the inside out. Essentially, Ultherapy targets the deeper tissues to lift and tighten while laser resurfacing works to address the fine lines on the surface of the skin.

Another important difference between laser resurfacing and Ultherapy is the amount of downtime associated with each treatment. Patients may have some social downtime after laser resurfacing, depending on the level of treatment. Ultherapy has no downtime.

Ultherapy Treatment Results

Ultherapy treatment is used on mildly to moderately loose or sagging skin on the face and neck. Results, however, vary from patient to patient, and on the condition and quality of the skin being treated.

Treatment that “lifts” the brow reduces excess skin on the eyelids, making the eyes look more open. Treatment that lifts and tightens sagging skin on the neck and under the chin eliminates or reduces a double chin or “turkey-gobbler.”

Although some patients may see immediate improvement, results of Ultherapy treatment are usually apparent within 2 to 3 months, during which old collagen is replaced with newer, more elastic collagen. At 6 months, full benefits are attained. Most patients need only one treatment, but those with significant issues may require more.

How long do results last?

Patients treated with Ultherapy still have fresh young collagen after a year’s time following the procedure, but the skin continues to age. Future touch-up treatments can help keep pace with the aging process, which varies by individual. Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery has extensive experience in Ultherapy treatments and has hundreds of amazing results that have lasted for well over 2 years.

Ultherapy Side Effects

Side effects of Ultherapy treatment are usually minor and temporary, and limited to the treatment area. Side effects include:

  • Slight redness
  • Slight swelling
  • Tingling
  • Tenderness

Ultherapy treatment is not a substitute for a surgical facelift, but is an option for those not interested in or ready for surgery.

Ultherapy Recovery

There is no downtime with Ultherapy.  Most patients are able to resume their normal activities right after the treatment. The manufacturer states that as an Ultherapy® patient, “you are able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take.”
