Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)
What is Otoplasty?
Ear Pinning surgery (Otoplasty) is a minimally invasive surgery commonly done to move ears closer to the face.
Dr. Roberto Garcia has been performing this surgery for over 15 years and has had amazing success due to the naturalness and balance that this procedure brings back to the face.
This procedure is common among younger patients. Many times the patient and parents come to see Dr. Garcia if the patient is concerned with the appearance of the prominent ears and the psychological/social implications they are experiencing as a result.
What can Otoplasty do for me?
Otoplasty improves the look of the ears. It is most effective for correcting the following:
- Large or protruding ears
- Excessive earlobes
- Floppy Ears

Who is a good candidate for an Otoplasty?
The best candidates for an Otoplasty is an individual whom not only has the obvious signs of protruding ears, but one that has realistic expectations of the results. Patients need to be in good health.
Dr. Roberto Garcia performs otoplasty surgery either alone or in conjunction with other facial surgeries. If performed alone, the procedure can be performed in an office based surgery setting under mild sedation with a local anesthetic. If Dr. Garcia is performing Otoplasty as part of another surgery necessitating heavier anesthesia, it will be done in a JCAHO/AAAHC accredited surgery center with board certified Anesthesiologists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and Registered Nurses. Patients may have a choice of IV sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes no more than one hour.
Dr. Garcia performs a unique and natural technique with barely visible scars that blend into the crease behind the ear.
Ear Pinning Surgery Risks
Although rare, possible complications of an Otoplasty include bleeding, infection, bruising, and swelling.
After an Otoplasty, Dr. Garcia wraps the incisions in light bandages that are removed the next morning. The next morning all incisions are carefully cleaned by our staff and the hair is gently cleansed. Dr. Garcia will instruct you on how to wear a certain type of head band to reduce the swelling and accelerate the healing process.
Dr. Garcia specializes in a very meticulous closure of all incisions. The stitches are carefully removed one week after the surgery. Swelling, numbness, bruising and a feeling of tightness or tension around the ears may be felt. Most of these side effects resolve within 2 to 3 weeks, and sensation typically returns to normal within a few months. The scars from an Otoplasty are imperceptible and most patients are back to their usual activities by 1 week.
