What is Botox®?
Botox® is a neurotoxin prescription drug that when injected temporarily paralyze muscles. They are used to treat furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin that are formed by the continual contraction of facial muscles. In addition to its cosmetic applications, they can be used to treat a number of medical problems, including excessive sweating, overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back and jaw pain, and migraines.
In his many years in practice, Dr. Roberto Garcia has performed thousands of Botox® procedures to address facial lines and is very happy with the outcome.
What can Botox® help treat?
Neurotoxins are very safe and effective injections that can be used to treat the following:
- Forehead furrows
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Lip Lines
- Down turn of the mouth
- Lines below the eyes
- Skin bands on the neck
According to Allergan (the manufacturer of BOTOX®), BOTOX® Cosmetic has been “extensively researched, with approximately 2500 studies.”
Who is the ideal candidate for botox®?
BOTOX® is used to treat dynamic wrinkles, those lines and folds that occur over time as a result of repeated facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning or laughing. Dynamic wrinkles can be difficult to treat with other cosmetic treatments, but BOTOX® effectively and safely treat dynamic wrinkles softening them or making them disappear altogether. Both men and women with dynamic wrinkles can be ideal candidates for BOTOX® treatment. BOTOX® is most commonly used to treat individuals who have forehead lines or frown lines and wrinkles at the corners of the eyes.
Using a very fine needle, neurotoxins are injected directly into facial muscles that are causing furrows and lines. Receiving the injections requires no anesthetic, but Dr. Garcia often chooses to numb the area to be injected with ice packs or a topical anesthetic cream. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment.
At Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery, all injections are performed by either Dr. Roberto Garcia or our very highly trained Nurse Practitioner.
Botox® Side Effects
Injection-site side effects of Botox® are usually mild and temporary, and may include the following:
Normal activities may be resumed immediately after receiving injections.
Botox® Vs. Dermal Fillers
Botox® is a neurotoxin that blocks the action of nerves on muscles. It is used to target muscles that form wrinkles. It relaxes the muscles, softening the wrinkle. It is typically used for the forehead lines and crow’s feet. In most cases, Botox® usually lasts for 3-6 months.
Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to add volume and fill in wrinkles, directly softening them. There are many different types of fillers and each tends to work well in some areas and not in others. A qualified doctor or nurse practitioner will be able to tell you what is needed.
Can Botox® be combined with other treatments?
Botox® injections combined with facial fillers for dermal contouring is a popular option for patients seeking to remove the signs of fine lines and wrinkles while filling in deep wrinkles or folds in the skin to provide a fuller, more youthful appearance.
How long does Botox® last?
The duration of activity of all the neurotoxins are very similar. One may report anecdotally that it lasts longer than the other, but for the most part, they all last 3-4 months. It has been found that areas treated on a regular basis may retain results longer.
Are there any alternative treatments?
There really is no substitute to get rid of thick forehead lines. Botox® and similar products such as, Dysport or Xeomin, are great at improving the appearance of dynamic wrinkles on the forehead. Fillers are not a good option for this area. Laser skin resurfacing may help, but it is more useful if Botox® is first injected prior to the laser treatment.
Is there any anesthesia used during treatment?
Typically, a numbing agent is not necessary when undergoing Botox treatments, however, a topical ointment or ice prior to injection can be applied.
