The concept behind microneedling is to wound the body to initiate a healing response. The concept isn’t new — it was originally proposed in the 1950s, and then reappeared in the 90s using tattoo guns without ink to treat post-surgical scars.
At Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery, we use the rejuvapen microneedling system to improve skin texture and firmness; and to reduce scars, pore size, and stretch marks.
What is Microneedling?
For microneedling at Contoura, we use the nine-needle Rejuvapen “pen.” We move the pen over the target areas. As the pen crosses the treatment area, its nine microscopic needles create microscopic punctures down through the epidermis into the dermis layer of the skin. Although the tiny punctures/channels begin to heal almost immediately, your body perceives the punctures as wounds and a wound-repair response is triggered. The body produces new collagen and elastin to send to the “wound” to heal it. Collagen is a protein responsible for the skin’s structural support, while elastin makes the skin firm, yet pliable.
Beyond the microscopic channels triggering the wound response, they also allow the Contoura team to apply topical gels, serums, and creams that can penetrate the skin far more efficiently. This further improves the outer layer of the skin.
Why do I need more collagen?
Collagen is the key to younger-looking skin. The problem is that our production of collagen and elastin drops dramatically as we age. At the age of 20, our collagen production has peaked, and it will drop one additional percentage point every year from there on out. At 40, we’re producing 20 percent less collagen, 30 percent less at 50! No wonder our skin starts to sag and allows the formation of wrinkles and creases.
What skin issues does microneedling improve?
At Contoura, we use microneedling on all skin tones and it doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation. It can be used anywhere on the body, but the face, neck, and décolletage are the typical targets.
Here are skin conditions we treat with microneedling:
- Acne scars
- Large pores
- Fine lines
- Uneven texture
- Stretch marks
What are some of the benefits of microneedling?
Microneedling treatments can include the addition of growth factors that result in a more rapid and robust collagen stimulation process. Other benefits include:
- Lifts, tightens and rejuvenates skin
- Increase in elasticity
- Fine lines and wrinkles visibly reduced
- Pores become finer
- Improves the appearance of acne scarring
- Improves the appearance of facial scarring
- Enhances the overall appearance of the skin
What Microneedling System Do You Use?
Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery uses the Rejuvapen Micro-Fractional system. By far, it is the most superior technology we have found.
How does Rejuvapen Micro-Fractional system work?
The Rejuvapen system works by stimulating the skin’s own natural ability to produce new collagen and elastin for healthier, younger-looking skin. Micro needling accelerated this repair process by creating microscopic channels, which also allow products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin.
New collagen and elastin can reverse years ofsun damage, improve acne scars and enhance the overall appearance of aging skin.

Is microneedling safe?
Microneedling is a safe treatment for many types of skin issues. We recommend finding an experienced, medical aesthetician to perform the treatment.
Does microneedling hurt?
You would think that creating thousands of microscopic punctures on your skin would hurt, but we apply a topical anesthetic to all treatment areas prior to your microneedling session. This keeps you comfortable. Patients equate the feeling of microneedling as similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin.
Will there be recovery time after my microneedling?
While microneedling won’t stop you from performing your normal activities, it’s best to schedule your session as an after-work procedure. Immediately following your treatment your skin will appear red and flushed, kind of like a mild sunburn. The degree of redness depends on the setting of the Rejuvapen needle depth and the number of overlapping passes made across the treatment area. The redness usually passes by the next day. You may also have some slight swelling, and the treatment areas may feel a little tight for a day or so.
When will I see results and how long will they last?
There is an immediate “glow” after your treatment session, but microneedling is really a progression of results. This is because your collagen and elastin production ramps up and continues. Visible changes with the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Your results can continue to improve for up to six months.
How long your results will last is dependent on your unique body. The new collagen and elastin aren’t going anywhere, but their production still continues to drop with normal aging. That’s why continuing treatments at Contoura are recommended to keep up with these decreases.
How many treatments will I need?
Some of our patients opt to have a single microneedling treatment every year to achieve the results they seek. Most patients like the continued boost in collagen production and the look of their skin. They have from 4-6 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, or acne scars, 6-8 sessions will likely be recommended spaced at six-week intervals.
Risk and Side Effects of Microneedling
Microneedling should be performed by an experienced, certified technician under the direct supervision of a physician. Strict adherence to proper hygiene and procedures is required. It is very important that the equipment and products be sterile and free from allergens that can cause contact dermatitis. The face should be cleaned and prepped before treatment to prevent cross contamination and spread of bacteria.
At Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery we offer the Vectra 3D, a state of the art imaging system that allows patients to preview their expected results prior to undergoing a procedure.
During your consultation, Dr. Garcia will take photographs of a patient’s face or specific part that will be performed on. He will then create a 3D digital replication of the same body part using the VECTRA simulator. These images will allow Dr. Garcia to preview the various surgical/nonsurgical options with the patient.
