Cheek & Chin Implants
Cheek/Chin Implant Surgery Commonly Asked Questions:
Cheek augmentation using cheek implants is an option for those who want to replace facial fullness lost through aging, or for those who simply want more prominent cheekbones. The ideal candidate is old enough to indicate complete growth and development of the facial structure.
Mentoplasty (chin surgery) is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin by either augmenting or reducing it. Chin implants improve a person’s profile by making a “weak” chin look stronger. Chin reduction also improves the profile, but removes bone and/or tissue and muscle to do so. Chin Implant surgery is sometimes performed together with Rhinoplasty (nose job) to achieve proper balance within the lower two third of the face.
Dr. Roberto Garcia has years of experience performing these surgeries. He will develop a very safe and effective treatment to achieve a natural and aesthetically pleasing result.

Who are good candidates for Cheek and Chin Surgery?
The ideal candidates for these surgeries are in good health and are concerned with correcting the issues indicated above. Many times, the patient is interested in softer, more appealing features to accentuate other parts of the face.
How are Cheek and Chin surgery performed?
Dr. Roberto Garcia performs Cheek and Chin implant surgery either alone or in conjunction with other aging face surgeries. If performed alone, the procedure can be performed in an office based surgery setting under mild sedation with a local anesthetic. If Dr. Garcia is performing Otoplasty as part of another surgery necessitating heavier anesthesia, it will be done in a JCAHO/AAAHC accredited surgery center with board certified Anesthesiologists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and Registered Nurses. Patients may have a choice of IV sedation or general anesthesia. Neither one of these procedures take more than one hour.
During the Cheek implant procedure, Dr. Garcia will make a small incision inside the mouth, near the gum line; it is through this incision that the implant is inserted. A pocket is created before the implant is placed; the implant is then secured by attaching it to bone or soft tissue, and the incision is closed with sutures.
During the Chin Augmentation procedure, an incision is made inside the mouth, which eliminates visible scarring. A pocket is created for the implant (typically made of semi-solid silicone or a mesh like substance called Mersilene), which is then placed and positioned in front of the jawbone. Once in place, the implant is secured with sutures. When an incision in the mouth is not possible, it is made underneath the chin so that the scar is not apparent. The patient returns home the same day.
What are the risks of Cheek and Chin Implant Surgery?
Although rare, In addition to the risks associated with any surgery, those related to augmentation with cheek and chin implants include the following:
- Numbness to the cheek or chin
- Implant rejection
- Implant shifting
- Prolonged pain
What is the recovery from Cheek and Chin Implant surgery like?
After augmentation with any of these implant procedures, the patient will experience soreness, swelling and numbness at the incision site and in the respective areas where the implants were placed. We usually discourage the use of narcotics as pain medications, as our patients typically do fine with over the counter medications that not only help with pain, but aid in swelling. Patients usually return to work within a week. The recovery period is usually between 4 to 6 weeks.
The results of cheek and chin implant surgery are immediately apparent. Implants provide long-lasting results from a single procedure, unlike facial fillers, which must be continually repeated to maintain results. There is no visible scarring from incisions placed in the mouth, and only minimal scarring from incisions placed underneath the chin area.
The Cheek and chin implant Consultation Using 3D Imaging
At Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery we offer the Vectra 3D, a state of the art imaging system that allows patients to preview their expected results prior to undergoing a procedure.
During your consultation, Dr. Garcia will take photographs of a patient’s face or specific part that will be performed on. He will then create a 3D digital replication of the same body part using the VECTRA simulator. These images will allow Dr. Garcia to preview the various surgical/nonsurgical options with the patient.
